Neuroscience · Learning · Behaviour

The farthest frontier is within.

Meta Lab is an independent lab studying how minds learn, attend and change. We work through neuroscience, learning science and careful experiment, and we include contemplative traditions as a subject of study. We build tools only where the evidence allows.

Mission

To understand how behaviour and experience change, and to test that understanding in everyday life, with preregistered methods, honest measurement and results reported as they are.

Research directions

Open questions,
asked carefully.

Our agenda turns large questions about learning, attention and consciousness into hypotheses that can be tested, and reports what is found, including what is not.

Status · Proposed

How patterns change

Habits are learned through prediction, reinforcement and context, and are rarely erased. How can a new response be built, practised across contexts, and made strong enough to outcompete an old one?

Attention, arousal and regulation

What do paced breathing and cardiorespiratory physiology actually change, measured honestly, given that physiology indexes arousal and not thoughts?

Personalised, self-testing interventions

Can AI-assisted, just-in-time support adapt to a person and test itself within that person, through micro-randomised trials reported openly?

Intention and measurable outcomes

How can claims about intention be studied rigorously, with behaviour as the primary outcome, defined and registered before the work begins?

Practising together

What changes, if anything, when people practise, reflect or pray as a group rather than alone, and how would we know?

Contemplative practice and the brain

What can psychology and neuroscience responsibly say about meditation and Christian prayer as subjects of study, and what lies beyond their reach?

The science of change

Change happens by learning,
not by forgetting.

Automatic patterns are learned, and so are their alternatives. We study how a pattern can be interrupted, how a new response is practised until it competes, and how support can arrive at the moment it matters.

Learning and competing responses

Prediction, reinforcement and context shape what we do automatically. We study interrupting a pattern and practising an alternative across many contexts.

Arousal and attention

Paced breathing and cardiorespiratory measures, interpreted with care: physiology indexes arousal, not thoughts.

Just-in-time support

Personalised prompts that test themselves through within-person randomisation, with results reported honestly.

Sensory and attentional tools

Sound, light and visuals, evaluated against credible controls rather than against nothing.

Separate measures, not one score

Physiology, experience and behaviour are measured and reported separately, never merged into a single brain state score.

Behaviour first

What a person actually does is the primary outcome. How it feels matters, and is reported alongside.

Applications in development

Tools built
on the evidence.

Alongside the research, we are designing practical tools grounded in the same questions. Each is released, and named, only when it is complete.

Status · In development

Changing patterns and following through

Structured practice for building new responses to old triggers, and turning an intention into the next concrete action.

Regulation and focus

Short, measured exercises for steadying arousal and gathering attention.

Rebuilding after hardship

Guidance for restoring identity, confidence and boundaries. Never a substitute for professional care.

Preparation for rest

Evening practices that help the mind set the day down before sleep.

Prayer and stillness

Guided, voice-first time for contemplative quiet and Christian prayer.

Supportive AI companions

Carefully tested AI guidance for reflection and steadier states of mind. Designed to support people, not replace human care.

Approach

Curiosity without
conclusions decided in advance.

Bold questions deserve careful methods. These principles shape every study and every tool.

Hypothesis is not evidence

We state what is an idea, what is under test, and what has been shown, and register outcomes in advance.

Uncertainty in the open

Limitations, null results and corrections are published alongside anything promising.

Measure what matters

Behaviour, experience and physiology are kept distinct. Traditions we study are described on their own terms.

Complete before offered

A tool is shared only when it is finished, safe, and does what it says.
